The newly inaugurated Major League Cricket (MLC) concluded in a thrilling fashion on Monday with MI New York defeating Seattle Orcas by seven wickets in the final.


Pollard's celebratory video call with Bravo continues tradition of friendly rivalry

While the victory itself was a landmark moment, signalling the emergence of a new franchise league, it also added another fascinating chapter to the friendly rivalry between two of cricket's most celebrated T20 players, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo.

Batting first, Seattle Orcas posted a challenging total of 183/9 in a high-pressure game. In response, Nicholas Pooran, leading MI New York in Pollard's absence due to a shoulder injury, turned the match on its head with an explosive and unbeaten 137 off just 55 balls. His match-winning century, studded with 13 sixes and ten fours, paved the way for MI New York's historic win.

However, the focus shifted post-match to Pollard, who equalled his compatriot Bravo's record of 16 T20 titles. Pollard's off-field presence was felt strongly, both in guiding the team and engaging in his customary friendly banter with Bravo.

The two West Indian legends have often exchanged playful jibes, turning their on-field competition into a jovial rivalry cherished by fans worldwide.

After the MCL 2023 Final win, Pollard was pictured on a video call with Bravo, teasing him with the win that brought him level with his tally of T20 titles. The image rapidly went viral, highlighting the sentiments of camaraderie that both players share.

Earlier in the tournament, during the play-offs against Texas Super Kings, Pollard had mimicked an 'Aeroplane' gesture after defeating Bravo's team. This was a whimsical reply to a similar gesture by Bravo during their IPL face-offs.

Meanwhile, the latest title victory cemented Mumbai Indians’ position as one of the most successful cricket franchises globally. This was the 9th franchise league trophy for Mumbai Indians, adding to their five IPL trophies, two Champions League titles, and the inaugural edition of the WPL, won by MI's women's team earlier this year.
