'Few More Ashes Now': Aussie Batting Coach on Warner's Ambition After Broad's Retirement

Australian opener, David Warner seems to have found a renewed appetite for playing in future Ashes series, and it might have something to do with his old rival Stuart Broad’s retirement, teased Australian batting coach Michael di Venuto.

Di Venuto's witty comment on Warner's Ashes plans after Broad's retirement

The England pacer, who has notoriously dismissed Warner 17 times in Test cricket, announced his retirement after Day 3 of the ongoing Test at The Oval.

This led to di Venuto's tongue-in-cheek comment that Warner's enthusiasm to play in more Ashes series might have been reignited by Broad's departure from the field.

After the end of play on Day 4, Di Venuto couldn't resist joking about Warner's newfound eagerness for future Ashes, suggesting it may have been spurred by Broad's exit.

"I think he's pretty keen to go on for a few more Ashes series now [hinting at Broad’s retirement],” said Di Venuto.

He then earnestly pointed out that while Warner's footwork and energy out of the crease have been impressive, his dismissal has often been due to uncharacteristic poor decisions.

"On this tour, he has looked to be positive most of the time on his feet. We have seen plenty of energy out of the crease. He has made some really good starts, and just generally made a poor decision when he has been dismissed," added the Aussie batting coach.

According to the Australian coach, Warner's recent performance has been somewhat atypical in terms of how he has been dismissed. However, he acknowledged that in the current innings where they are chasing 384, the southpaw has displayed excellent form and made smart decisions.

"The way Warner has been playing, it has been a little out of character when he has been dismissed. So far in this innings he has looked really good, made some good decisions, and played really nicely," concluded Di Venuto.

Meanwhile, beyond the humorous comment, the final Ashes 2023 Test has set up nicely. With rain affecting the fourth day's play, Australia is pursuing a target of 384.

Openers Usman Khawaja and Warner have stitched an unbroken partnership of 135 in 38 overs, laying a promising foundation for the chase. An exciting Day 5 awaits as Australia looks to clinch the series 3-1, while England looks to draw it 2-2.
