MI New York pacer, Trent Boult led his team to a thrilling victory in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 Challenger in what was a masterclass in powerplay bowling.

Facing Texas Super Kings (TSK) at Dallas's Grand Prairie Stadium, Boult's clinical 4-24 proved to be the game-changer, ensuring MI New York's spot in the tournament final.


Boult's powerplay magic left CSK's top-order in shreds

The left-arm seamer has been nothing short of sensational in the tournament, racking up three back-to-back four-wicket hauls, and is MLC 2023’s top wicket-taker with 15 scalps in six games at a stunning average of 11.33. 

The match-defining performance against TSK was another shining feather in his cap as he left the opposition reeling early in their innings.

Making his intentions clear from the get-go, Boult conceded a frugal four runs in his opening over. What followed next an exhibition of powerplay bowling. Within four deliveries, the TSK captain Faf du Plessis and Mitchell Santner were dispatched to the pavillion, leaving TSK languishing at 18/2.

The Kiwi seamer wasn't done with his heroics yet, as he made a return in the death overs, claiming the crucial scalp of Devon Conway and Calvin Savage to complete his four-wicket haul and leaving TSK in tatters.

TSK, having been invited to bat first, managed a total of 158. The genius of Boult in the powerplay overs played a key role in confining TSK to a moderate score.

In response, MI New York rode on Shayan Jahangir's fiery 36 off 18 balls. The momentum seemed to dip in the middle overs, but Tim David reignited it with three consecutive sixes off Mohammad Mohsin. 

Towards the end, Dewald Brewis showcased his mettle, scoring a composed 41 off 33 balls, steering MI New York to a six-wicket triumph and a berth in the MLC 2023 final.

With this victory, the stage is set for a thrilling MLC 2023 final showdown on Monday, July 31 in Texas, where MI New York will lock horns with the Seattle Orcas.
