The 2019 World Cup heartbreak has never been bigger for Indian cricket fans. While the Men in Blue triumphed in the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy in 2024 and 2025, the glaring injury still haunts fans. To add salt to the injury, Martin Guptill, who is considered the main orchestrator of the heartbreak, reshared a story that saw the infamous MS Dhoni run out by the retired Kiwi batter.

What Instagram Story Did Guptill Share?

On his official Instagram account, Martin Guptill reshared a story put by @bowwow_sports where they captioned the run out of MS Dhoni as "@martyguptill31 Are you a sniper?" indicating Guptill's bullet-like throw and with deadly accuracy.

Guptill Rekindles India's 2019 World Cup Heartbreak

Speaking of the incident, with India chasing 240, Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja had brought the game back from the brink. The pair added 116 for the seventh wicket and after Jadeja departed for a valiant 77, the responsibility fell on Dhoni to take India home.

MS Dhoni responded with typical calmness, nudging singles and keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the start of the 49th over, with 25 runs needed off 11 balls, Dhoni carved Lockie Ferguson over point for a massive six. It reignited Indian fans’ hopes. But two balls later, in an attempt to retain strike, Dhoni turned for a desperate second run after tapping the ball to the leg side.

Martin Guptill, stationed at square leg, swooped in and fired a flat, accurate throw directly at the stumps. Dhoni, running at full stretch, was just inches short. The third umpire confirmed what millions feared, Dhoni was run out.

That direct hit ended India’s fightback. Guptill’s brilliance in the field had extinguished their final hope. With Dhoni gone, India fell short by 18 runs, and New Zealand marched into the World Cup final of 2019.
