Sri Lanka’s cricket carnival is back on the calendar, just not where you would expect it. The 6th edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will now roll out the red carpet from November 27 to December 23, 2025, shifting from its usual mid-year slot to a new window at the tail-end of the year.
LPL 2025 Set For Year-End Showdown With Fresh Dates Announced
It is a bold move and there is a reason behind this change as stated in a press release by Sri Lanka Cricket. According to Samantha Dodanwela, the tournament director, this shift is all about “aligning the LPL with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.” With the global showpiece looming, Sri Lanka wants its top guns match-ready and firing on all cylinders.
Cricket fans can gear up for some sizzling action across three venues Colombo (RPICS), Pallekele (PICS), and Dambulla (RDICS). The LPL has always promised high-octane cricket and this year will be no different. With the tournament bumping elbows with the T20 World Cup 2026 build-up, expect both local talent and international stars to come out swinging.
SLC Terminates Jaffna Kings And Colombo Strikers
But it hasn't all been smooth sailing. Earlier this year in April, SLC dropped a bombshell by terminating two long-standing franchises: the Jaffna Kings and the Colombo Strikers citing “failure to fulfill contractual obligations
That decision has shaken up the LPL big time. Jaffna, the most successful team in LPL history with three titles in four seasons, is now hunting for its third owner whereas Colombo is searching its fourth.
At this point, none of the original five franchise owners are still in the mix. The only teams left Galle Marvels, Dambulla Sixers and Kandy Falcons, all came in fresh just last year.
Despite the off-field chaos, the LPL continues to hold its ground as Sri Lanka’s flagship T20 league. Since its birth in 2020, it’s become a key stepping stone for local first-class cricketers to rub shoulders with global stars.
And now, with its timing lined up just before the T20 World Cup, there is more than just a trophy at stake. Players will be looking to catch the selectors' eyes, make headlines and maybe seal a seat on the plane to the World Cup.
