Jasprit Bumrah's workload to be managed [Source: @aminyusuf/X.com]
In a recent development, the BCCI is reviewing its workload management strategy for Jasprit Bumrah following India's Test series in England, where the pace spearhead played only three matches despite the five-Test contest.
While the 31-year-old's limited availability was pre-determined, the board now prefers selecting Jasprit Bumrah only when available for the entire series moving forward.
Medical Team Set To Assess Bumrah's Fitness
Sources close to TOI reveal that the team management faced logistical challenges due to last-minute decisions on Bumrah's participation. His unavailability for the Oval Test was confirmed merely hours before the match, despite public knowledge of his three-Test cap at the tour's outset.
A BCCI insider emphasised a revised approach while speaking to TOI as per a report. "Strength and condition coaches can set workload thresholds, but Bumrah's availability should depend on his fitness, which will be assessed by the medical team before each selection," the report read.
Earlier batting coach Sitanshu Kotak detailed the precision behind managing bowlers' loads in a press conference.
"It's about maintaining consistent overs per week without sudden spikes. If a bowler prepares with 30 weekly overs but delivers 35 in an innings, that's risky. The bowler's self-assessment of fatigue is equally crucial," Kotak said in his statement.
Bumrah's Workload Since BGT 2024-25
Bumrah's previous Australia tour demonstrated effective workload distribution – his 52-over effort in Melbourne enabled a full five-Test stint without breakdowns. However, England presented different challenges, with his 33 overs at Manchester spread across three days still triggering caution.
The recalibration aims to balance Bumrah's longevity with tactical clarity for future series planning, ensuring India's premium fast bowler remains both impactful and sustainable across formats.
Notably, the next red-ball assignments for India offer a few months of respite for the team and for Bumrah, who is of concern. The next Test tour starts in October against the West Indies for a two-match series. After the Windies challenge, India will host South Africa for a two-match Test series in November.
