Everything was going fine for England on Day 1 of the Oval Test before disaster struck. Towards the closing stages of the play, Chris Woakes' attempted dive to save a boundary led to a nasty injury to his shoulder. The England fielder looked in immense pain as he probably dislocated his shoulder.
Woakes suffers gruesome injury
The unfortunate incident occurred when Jamie Overton pitched up a delivery to Karun Nair, and the Indian batter drove it down the ground as Woakes gave it a chase. He managed to keep the ball inside, but in the process injured his shoulder, and clutched it immediately.
The England team physio rushed, and the fielder was carried off as Liam Dawson replaced him on the field. It looked as if his shoulder popped out, as Woakes looked in discomfort. His participation in the remainder of the Test match remains under dark clouds as England are likely to miss his services with the ball.
If Woakes is not there, England will be left with Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue as the three main pacers of the team.
Woakes' sorry state of affairs in the ongoing series
In the ongoing Test series between India, and England, a lot was expected of veteran Chris Woakes, but so far, it has been a disappointing series for him. He has lacked control over his lines and lengths, and the pace has also gone down considerably.
With the bat, he has just scored 64 runs, with an average of just 10.67, meanwhile, with the red cherry in hand, Woakes has only scalped 10 wickets, at an average of 52. He has been the only bowler apart from Mohammed Siraj to have played in all five Tests, but the right-arm pacer has looked a pale shadow of his former self throughout the tour.
