The final Test at the Kennington Oval is knocking on the door and Team India has everything to play for. With the series hanging 2-1 in England’s favour, the Men in Blue need to bring their A-game and there is no better place than The Oval to turn things around.

This iconic venue has often seen Indian batters dig in, grind it out and pile on the runs. As India gears up for one last shot at squaring the series, here is a look at the Top 5 Indian batters with the most Test runs at the Kennington Oval.

5. Gundappa Viswanath: 241 Runs

Gundappa Viswanath was known for his wristy elegance and a temperament made for red-ball cricket. At The Oval, Vishy stood tall on multiple occasions and always found a way to steer India out of trouble.

Across three Tests between 1971 and 1982, he notched 241 runs at an average of 48.20, including three fifties. Be it flicks through midwicket or cuts behind point, Viswanath always looked at home in English conditions and The Oval brought the best out of him.

4. KL Rahul: 249 Runs

KL Rahul has been in sensational form in the ongoing series and his past record at The Oval only adds fuel to the fire. In just two matches at the venue, Rahul has smashed 249 runs, including that glorious 149 in 2018 that had class written all over it.

With 511 runs already in the bank from this series and two tons to his name, Rahul is looking like India’s most reliable batter right now. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he climbs higher on this list by the end of the fifth Test.

3. Ravi Shastri: 253 Runs

Before he was the loudest voice in the commentary box or India’s head coach, Ravi Shastri was a gritty all-rounder who loved a scrap. And in 1990, he played one of the most memorable knocks by an Indian at The Oval: a rock-solid 187.

Across two Tests, Shastri has compiled 253 runs at this venue. His ability to occupy the crease and blunt the new ball made him a nightmare for England’s bowlers. The man knew how to kill the game ball by ball.

2. Sachin Tendulkar: 272 Runs

You can’t talk about run-machines and not bring up the Master Blaster. Sachin Tendulkar might not have scored a century at The Oval but he still piled up 272 runs with typical consistency. Three fifties in six innings tell you just how often he got starts.

While the three-figure mark may have eluded him at this venue, Sachin’s ability to hold fort and keep the scoreboard ticking was crucial during some of India’s most hard-fought Tests in England. Class was always permanent, no matter the turf.

1. Rahul Dravid: 443 Runs

Topping the charts is The Wall. Rahul Dravid didn’t just score runs at The Oval. He owned it. In three Tests between 2002 and 2011, Dravid smashed 443 runs at a Bradmanesque average of 110.75. Two hundreds, including a massive 217, cemented his place as the king of this ground.

His technique, temperament and timing were tailor-made for swinging English conditions. When others were poking and prodding, Dravid stood still, absorbed the pressure and made the bowlers toil.
