Chris Woakes gets injured on Day 1 [Source: AFP]
England faced a big setback on Day 1 of the fifth and final Test against India of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy when star pacer Chris Woakes left the field due to a possible shoulder injury. He seemed to land awkwardly on his shoulder while diving, and it was clear he was in a lot of pain.
Since Woakes is England’s most experienced bowler, his injury could seriously hurt their chances in this important match. Moreover, England is already dealing with other injuries, including the absence of captain Ben Stokes.
The incident happened in the 57th over of India’s first innings. After Karun Nair hit a straight shot off Jamie Overton’s delivery, Woakes chased the ball hard to stop it from going to the boundary. However, as he dived on the damp outfield near mid-off, he seemed to lose balance. As a result, he landed badly on his shoulder and stayed down in pain.
After receiving medical attention from the team physio, Woakes slowly walked off the field and headed back to the dressing room. While there’s been no official update about how serious the injury is, it’s expected that Woakes will undergo scans overnight to find out more.
Gus Atkinson Provides Key Update on Chris Woakes After Gruesome Injury
Meanwhile, Gus Atkinson provides a major injury update on Chris Woakes. Speaking at the press conference after the day’s play, Atkinson said,
“I don’t know too much, but it doesn’t look great. It’s the last game of the series, and it’s always a big shame when anyone gets injured. I’m hoping it’s not too serious, and whatever it is, he’ll have everyone’s full support."
Before getting injured, Woakes had bowled 14 overs and took the important wicket of KL Rahul while giving away 46 runs.
Even though Woakes got hurt, England still had a strong Day 1. They bowled out India for 204 runs for the loss of six wickets by the end of the day. England had won the toss and chose to bowl first on a pitch that favored bowlers and that decision paid off. Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue both took two wickets each, helping England stay on top.
On the other side, India struggled with the bat, but Karun Nair played a gritty knock and stayed not out at 52. He will be the key player for India on Day 2. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan chipped in with 38 runs.
