Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the IPG Group have terminated the agreements of the Colombo Strikers and Jaffna Kings franchises from the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Both Strikers and Kings were originally scheduled to take part in the upcoming LPL 2025 season in Sri Lanka later this year. However, their respective terminations now mark a seismic shift in the competitive landscape of the Sri Lankan T20 extravaganza.
According to an official statement, the two franchises failed to fulfil their contractual obligations as outlined in agreements with the IPG Group. It is worth noting that the IPG Group is the event rights holder of the LPL.
Colombo Strikers, Jaffna Kings terminated from LPL
Both Colombo Strikers and Jaffna Kings franchises failed to fulfil the contractual obligations outlined in their agreements with the IPG Group. The agreements themselves were established at the commencement of the team’s participation in the LPL.
Their termination means that Colombo Strikers and Jaffna Kings will not be participating in the upcoming LPL 2025 season in Sri Lanka. The IPG Group is expected to transfer or assign the ownership of the Colombo and Jaffna based teams to new investors.
It is worth noting that the Jaffna-based franchise is LPL’s most successful outfit by a landslide, having won four of the five LPL titles to date. Moreover, the Jaffna Kings team, under the leadership of Charith Asalanka, also lifted the LPL 2024 title last year and were on course to start this year’s LPL 2025 as defending champions.
The LPL 2025 season will reportedly be played in July later this year. However, the SLC is yet to finalise a schedule for the tournament.
