After being abruptly suspended due to escalating cross-border tensions between Indian and Pakistan, the IPL 2025 could be back on track as early as May 17 or 18. However, questions loom large over the availability of overseas players, many of whom had returned home amid the uncertainty and are now hesitant to rejoin the league despite the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Will they be forced to come back to India and play the IPL or will the BCCI will them an upper hand to make the decision?
IPL Franchises Show Flexibility Amid Uncertainty
According to a report by RevSportz, IPL franchises are unlikely to force their overseas players and staff to return for the remainder of the tournament. The move is being seen as a considerate and pragmatic step, given the geopolitical context and logistical challenges involved.
“We will not push anyone and will leave it to them. Yes, this is a force majeure, an unforeseen event which is beyond anyone’s control,” said the CEO of a franchise.
The situation presents a tough balancing act for the teams, who must now prepare for the resumption of the season without full clarity on player availability.
Overseas cricketers are not only grappling with concerns over regional tensions but are also on tight schedules, with many preparing for international fixtures. Notably, Australia and South Africa will face off in the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord’s from June 11, leaving minimal room for flexibility.
BCCI Plans Tentative Restart, Awaiting Government Nod
Meanwhile, the BCCI is working behind the scenes to finalise the revised schedule, subject to government clearance. A tentative restart date of May 17 or 18 is under consideration, with a packed calendar that could include daily double-headers to wrap up the remaining 12 group-stage games and four playoff matches by the end of the month.
