India's interim bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule revealed that the team management might try top-order batters as bowling options in the ongoing three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Notably, India has a formidable top-order, comprising Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill.

All these batters are capable of rolling their arms for a few overs. While Kohli bowls gentle medium pace, Gill and Rohit can chip in with handy off-spin. Gill even bowled an over, conceding fourteen runs in the first ODI that concluded in a tie

India to use Rohit, Kohli and Gill with the ball?

Meanwhile, Bahutule believes India's top-order batters' ability to bowl a few overs can not only help the team but also surprise their Lankan counterparts.

“I think our batters are good bowlers as well, to be honest. You know their primary skill is batting, so at times, they don’t focus much on their bowling. But they have the skills,” Bahutule said as quoted by PTI.

Considering the all-rounders' massive role in modern-day game, Bahutule expects one or two of these three batters to showcase their bowling skills in the ongoing series.

“In the T20Is, Rinku and Surya contributed with the ball. An opportunity was given to Shubman here. It’s going to be an all-rounder’s game in the coming days. So, if one or two (batsmen) from the top-order can bowl it will definitely help the team, of course, depending on pitch conditions and situations," he added.

“Also, it will be a surprise element to the opposition, if a batter can bowl. So, moving ahead there will be ample opportunities for batters to bowl," the former cricketer concluded.

The series is still in a stalemate after the first ODI ended in a tie, thanks to Charith Asalanka's heroic final spell. Both teams will face each other in the second encounter at the same venue on Sunday, August 4.
