The thrilling and nerve-wracking first ODI between India and Sri Lanka ended in a draw as India was bowled out in the 231-run chase with the scores levelled.

India looked in control when Rohit Sharma slammed a half-century at the top. However, the lower order couldn’t keep it together and lost wickets at regular intervals. The tail, meanwhile, completely collapsed despite needing just 1 run off 13 balls.

The unnecessary urgency and lack of game awareness certainly cost India a deserved victory whereas captain Charith Asalanka turned into a hero for his side.

Here’s the timeline of how SL vs IND panned out in Colombo:

IND vs SL Highlights: Dube, Axar Rattle SL Top Order

Sri Lanka were put under pressure early as Siraj struck first blood to dismiss Avishak Fernando in third over. While Nissanka slammed a half century, Mendis gifted Shivam Dube the first wicket of his ODI career.

Axar Patel, meanwhile, fetched two wickets against the run of play to completely outclass Sri Lanka out of the game until Dunith Wellalage unleashed resistance to slam 67 runs unbeaten knock.

IND vs SL Highlights: Hitman Lights Up The Show

With 231 runs on board, Rohit Sharma absolutely hammered Sri Lanka to bring up a 50-run partnership for the opening stand with Gill. He brought up his fifty with an authoritative six and appeared in incredible touch. However, India played cautiously while keeping the required run rate in check.

While Virat Kohli couldn’t get past 23 (32), the promotion of Washington Sundar to number 4 also backfired. Suddenly, India found themselves on the back foot after a couple of quick wickets.

IND Vs SL: India Bottle An Easy & Controlled Chase

Axar Patel and KL Rahul wasted good starts as the chase burden fell on the tailenders. With just 1 run needed off 15 deliveries, set batter Shivam Dube got beaten by Charith Asalanka’s sliding delivery. Sri Lanka overturned the on-field not-out decision with a timely DRS review.

Meanwhile, new batter in, Arshdeep Singh, instead of taking a single, went for a big shot and was trapped plumb LBW, thus resulting in a tie due to absence of super over.

Having said that, India will undoubtedly be displeased with the chase that they had under control until the final powerplay. A lot to introspect for Gambhir and brigade.
