India’s batting line-up once again failed to pile up the desired runs, this time getting steamrolled by the Australian pacers at the SCG. In Cape Town, South African batters Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma racked up majestic centuries while in India, forgotten batting star Karun Nair scaled a huge List A world record.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, January 3.

Virat Kohli Fails Again In Another Indian Collapse

Team India’s tour of first-innings batting woes continued at the SCG as they were enveloped for just 185 on the opening day of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test. Rishabh Pant scored a cracking 40 to top-score in the innings, while Virat Kohli once again poked outside off stump to fall for a low score. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, leading the team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, unleashed a few boundaries towards the closing stages of the innings during his 22-run cameo.

For Australia, Scott Boland snared four wickets, including the prized-scalps of Kohli, Pant, and in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Mitchell Starc (3-49) and captain Pat Cummins (2-37) collectively claimed five wickets together before the hosts lost opening batter Usman Khawaja to Bumrah on the final ball of the day at 9-1.

Ryan Rickelton And Temba Bavuma Tons Wear Down Pakistan

South African opener Ryan Rickelton mounted an unbeaten 176 from just 232 balls to navigate his team to 316-4 by stumps on Day 1 of the series-deciding second Test against Pakistan. Rickelton’s captain and number five batter Temba Bavuma also pounded 106 runs from 179 balls as the duo shared 235 runs together for the fourth wicket after forming forces at 72-3 around lunch.

Earlier in the day, Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas got the key wickets of Aiden Markram (17) and Wiaan Mulder (5) respectively while ace spinner Agha Salman dismissed Tristan Stubbs for a duck and centurion Bavuma mere moments before the close of play.

Saim Ayub Twists His Ankle In Nasty Injury On Day 1

Pakistan’s rising batting star Saim Ayub twisted his ankle on Day 1 of the Cape Town Test against South Africa to suffer a nasty injury. The youngster, seemingly in immense pain, was attended by the physios to be stretchered off the field. With roughly a month remaining prior to the launch of the 2025 Champions Trophy, it remains to be seen what is the extent of Ayub’s injury and how long will it keep him out of the field.

Daniel Sams And Bancroft’s Nasty Collision In BBL

Sydney Thunder, inspired by David Warner’s 49-run recovery and Sherfane Rutherford’s run-chase fury, defeated hosts Perth Scorchers by four wickets in a last-ball thriller at the Optus Stadium in match number 22 of the BBL 2024-25 season. The crackerjack of a result, however, was preceded by a nasty collision between two Sydney Thunder and Australian cricketers, Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft.

While Bancroft was left with a bloodied nose before walking off the field with team physio, Sams’ injury seemed much more serious as the Australian speedster was taken off the field on a stretcher.

Karun Nair Scales Huge List A Record

India’s forgotten Test star Karun Nair scaled a huge List A record through the course of his latest match-winning ton for Vidarbha in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The elegant right-hander smeared 112 runs from just 101 balls in a successful run-chase of 308 to record his seventh List A century, his third in succession and his fourth of the ongoing tournament.

Remarkably, Karun Nair’s latest batting masterclass also ensured that the cricketer minted 542 runs at a stretch without getting dismissed in List A matches, surpassing James Franklin’s haul of 527 runs from 2010.
