Sydney Thunder overcame hosts Perth Scorchers at the Optus Stadium in a last-ball thriller in match number 22 of the BBL 2024-25 season. The outcome marked Thunder’s third successive win to jump up to number three on the eight-team points table.
Here’s the timeline of how Scorchers vs Thunder panned out at Perth:
Scorchers vs Thunder Highlights: Finn Allens Sets Scorchers Off With Top-Order Blaze
Opening batter Finn Allen led Perth Scorchers’ early assault over Sydney Thunder bowlers with a 50-run stand in just 5.4 overs alongside partner Matty Hurst. While Hurst made a run-a-ball 23 with one boundary before finding David Warner at short midwicket off Chris Green, Allen raged on and blazed the Scorchers past the 100-run mark in just 11 overs.
The attacking New Zealand opener clattered six boundaries and five sixes to top-score with 68 from just 31 balls. Clubbing his maiden Big Bash fifty, Allen’s threatening stay was curtailed by Green.
The Sydney Thunder off-spinner trapped Ashton Turner for a duck off the very next delivery, while Tom Andrews knocked over number three Aaron Hardie for 10 as the Perth Scorchers crashed from 102-1 to 110-4 in 12.2 overs.
Scorchers vs Thunder Highlights: Connolly And Hobson Speed Up Scorchers To 177
Overcoming Perth Scorchers’ middle-order jitters, in-form Cooper Connolly and number six Nick Hobson batted out the remaining eight overs of the innings to share 67 quick runs.
Connolly launched two sixes and three boundaries to score 43* from 31 balls in his calculated slog-overs defiance, while Hobson cracked three boundaries in his unbeaten 17-ball 21* to take the Scorchers to a competitive 177-4 by the completion of their innings.
Scorchers vs Thunder Highlights: Warner Steadies Thunder Pursuit With Gilkes
Chasing 178, Sydney Thunder lost opening batter Blake Nikitaras for just a single in the second over of the innings to Perth Scorchers quick Lance Morris. Nikitaras’ captain and senior opening partner David Warner led Thunder’s counterattacking recovery by sharing 89 runs at a brisk pace with Matthew Gilkes. Both Warner and Gilkes smeared swift 40s each from their ends, with the former top-scoring through his 49-run knock from just 33 deliveries.
Gilkes was eventually out stumped off a wide from Cooper Connolly, while Jason Behrendorff and Morris tilted the tide back in Scorchers’ favor with the quick wickets of Oliver Davies and Warner as the visitors fell from 92-1 to 113-4.
Scorchers vs Thunder Highlights: Sherfane Rutherford’s Cameo Storms Past Scorchers
Batting at number six, Sydney Thunder’s Caribbean recruit Sherfane Rutherford smeared 39 unbeaten runs from just 19 deliveries with five boundaries and a six. Rutherford whacked three of those boundaries in the final over off Andrew Tye to blaze the Thunder to a thrilling last-ball win with four wickets in hand.
Sam Billings (13 off 9) and Chris Green (11 off 8) also chipped in with handy cameos along the way before getting toppled by Tye and Lance Morris respectively.
Debutant Hugh Weibgen launched a match-defining six during his six-ball unbeaten cameo of 9* as the Sydney Thunder jumped to number two on the BBL 2024-25 points table.
