Delhi Capitals had some steal buys in the IPL mega auction and have built a strong team for the next season. They have bought some brilliant players on Day 1 auction, but they also raised quite a few eyebrows by not going hard for their ex-skipper, Rishabh Pant.

The Capitals used RTM for Pant, but LSG raised the price to 27 crores and DC backed out of the bidding war as Pant went to the Lucknow based franchise. The Delhi side played a master-stroke by not spending 27 crores on Pant and instead buying KL Rahul for 14 crores.

In KL Rahul, DC have a captaincy/keeper material and the franchise have easily replaced Pant in the team. Many have now speculated that KL Rahul will be the one to lead the Capitals in the next IPL season, however, after the Day 1 auction ended, DC owner, Parth Jindal threw a surprise name in the reckoning as KL's captaincy wish hangs in jeopardy.

Parth Jindal confirmed that KL Rahul and Axar Patel are two candidates for captaincy and a decision will be taken soon over it.

“We were looking for stability in the top order, someone with experience who can build the innings. And, I think KL Rahul, given his record in the IPL, he's someone who's consistently given more than 400 runs every season. I think with the Kotla wicket, it is going to suit his game. We're very excited to have him,” Parth Jindal said after the auction.

“We have a very young batting lineup. Both KL and Axar are going to lead them and are going to guide them. KL's batting and experience will be a vital cog in the wheel,” he further explained.

Pant-KL swap teams as IPL auction heats up on Day 1

Rishabh Pant was the captain of the Delhi Capitals, and KL Rahul led the Lucknow Super Giants. However, the two swapped teams in the mega auction 2025 as Pant went to LSG and DC acquired KL Rahul.

Interestingly, Pant was bought for 27 crore and there is a great chance that Sanjiv Goenka, the LSG owner will make Pant their new skipper ahead of Nicholas Pooran. Both the sides look quite sorted as the two franchises eye their maiden IPL title.
