KL Rahul has reportedly received a warning from the Indian team management over his dwindling form in red-ball cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter, who made his return to Test cricket after more than six months through India’s Chennai affair against Bangladesh, scored a sluggish 16 in the first innings and punched out a swift 22* before Rohit Sharma’s second innings declaration.

Even in his preceding Duleep Trophy outing for India A, KL Rahul scored 94 runs across both innings, but after laboring for 232 deliveries.

After T20I snub, Rahul’s Test career comes under radar

After KL Rahul failed to notch up the desired runs for Team India against Bangladesh at the Chepauk Stadium, the 32-year-old was reportedly issued a stern warning from the Indian team management. As reported by Telegraph India, Rahul’s place in the Indian Test XI might well come under threat, especially with the emergence of rising middle-order stars like Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel.

KL Rahul has played 51 Test matches for India since making his format debut at the MCG back in December 2014. The cricketer has so far minted 2,901 runs across 88 Test innings at a substandard batting average of 34.12.

Young Sarfaraz Khan, on the other hand, made his debut earlier this year and plundered three match-winning half-centuries against England in five innings. While Khan has maintained an average of 50, he also demonstrated intent in his batting by striking at 79.36.

Team India will now host Bangladesh in the series-deciding second Test match in Kanpur, after taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series with a win in Chennai.

The Indian team will subsequently host New Zealand in a three-match series, before taking flight to Australia for a blockbuster five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy assignment. With crucial WTC points on the line, the Indian team management might well feel inclined to make some radical changes in the line-up within the next few weeks.
