Rohit Sharma recently retired from Test cricket in May, and now the big question is: who will be India’s next Test captain? With a major Test series against England starting on June 20, everyone is curious about who will lead the team.
Some of the main names being considered are Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul. Jasprit Bumrah was also a top contender but has pulled himself out, saying he might not be able to play all five Test matches in England because of fitness concerns.
No Final Call Yet On India’s Next Test Captain
According to a report by Sky Sports, the selectors have had informal chats with Gill and Pant but haven't made a final decision. One selector reportedly feels that Gill isn’t yet a regular or established enough player in the Test team to be made captain, and suggests he should be vice-captain for now.
"One selector at the BCCI has reservations over giving Gill the captaincy, given that his place on the side is not guaranteed, and suggested he would be better suited to the vice-captaincy role," the report read.
Shubman Gill is currently leading Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is doing well this season. The Punjab star has scored over 600 runs in 12 matches and is showing leadership skills.
Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, is captaining Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He has also led India in Test matches before, five times in total, with two wins and two losses.
Jasprit Bumrah was one of India’s best performers during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, but a back injury has made the selectors cautious about overusing him.
It is important to note that following Rohit Sharma's Test retirement, Virat Kohli also announced retirement before the much-anticipated tour.
The five-match Test series against England will begin on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds. The rest of the matches will be held at Birmingham, Lord’s, Manchester, and The Oval in London, ending on August 4.
