Australia cricketer Mitchell Marsh lit up the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday night with an incredible performance that helped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) break their four-match losing streak. Marsh’s powerful innings led LSG to a 33-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad.
Mitchell Marsh’s Maiden IPL Century Powers LSG To Big Win
Mitchell Marsh smashed his first-ever IPL century, scoring a stunning 117 runs off just 64 balls. With this, he became the first overseas player to hit a century in this season’s IPL. It took him over ten years to reach this milestone, and he shared how much it meant to him after the game.
"It's been very disappointing. We lost close games, and we are out of the race. The IPL is a beast of a competition. Any team can beat any team in this competition on a given day; that's why this is the best competition in the world," Marsh said in the post-match presentation after being adjudged the Player of the Match.
Talking about finally getting his first IPL hundred, Marsh said,
"I have had a few years off in between as well (on finally getting his first IPL hundred). First played for the Deccan Chargers in 2010. It's been a while. Getting an opportunity to open the batting. The partnership with Aiden on and off the field has been amazing. Came to the IPL pretty fresh. They (GT) bowled really well in the powerplay. If you are 12 off 12 in the powerplay, it's panic stations, but once we got a few good partnerships, it made things easy for us."
Mitchell Marsh’s explosive knock, which included two sixes and three boundaries in a single over off Rashid Khan, helped Lucknow post a huge total of 235/2. Nicholas Pooran also played a key role, finishing unbeaten on 56 from 27 balls. The pitch at Ahmedabad, made of black soil, made batting easier and allowed players to hit freely.
GT tried to chase the target and had some big moments, Jos Buttler hammered Avesh Khan for 4-6-6-4 in one over. But LSG’s Will O’Rourke stepped up at the right time, taking three important wickets, Sai Sudharsan, Sherfane Rutherford, and Rahul Tewatia. Shahrukh Khan fought hard with a quick 57 off 29 balls, but Gujarat eventually fell short, ending their innings at 202/9.
With this loss, Gujarat missed a chance to lock in a top-two finish, though they still have a shot if they beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their next game. Meanwhile, Lucknow, already out of the playoff race, will aim to end their season on a high when they face Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
