The Indian men’s cricket team is currently going through a period of transition. The former World Cup-winning opener, Gautam Gambhir, has taken over the job of the Indian head coach after the successful conclusion of his predecessor, Rahul Dravid’s reign.

During his playing days, Gambhir was always known for his fearless and gutsy attitude. Even as the mentor of two different IPL franchises, he showed signs of his bold attitude while making some out-of-the-box calls.

While taking India to newer heights of success will be Gambhir's primary aim, he will also have to nurture the new talents carefully to ensure a bright and secure future for Indian cricket. One such talent he will have to take special care of is Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young Indian opener has shown great promise at the highest level of the game and looks like one of the future core members of the team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, in his short career, has shown some outstanding characteristics. Some of these might remind the Indian cricket fans of Gautam Gambhir’s playing days. Here are three similarities between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gautam Gambhir, besides both being left-handed opening batters.

3. Guts and composure

Gautam Gambhir will forever be remembered in Indian cricket for his two immortal knocks in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup finals. He has also played some match-saving knocks for India under tremendous pressure in Test cricket. These facts point out the composure and guts that the man possessed. He seemed to thrive under pressure and on big occasions.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has shown similar traits in his short career. He debuted at 21 and showed no nerves at the biggest stage. Since then, he has matured and shown signs of being a great batter in the making. The fact that he has already scored two double-hundreds in Test cricket indicates the young man's composure and temperament.

2. All format openers

During his playing days, Gautam Gambhir opened the innings for Team India in all three formats of the game: Test, ODIs, and T20Is. He was equally adept and skilled at handling the pressure of giving his team good starts in all three formats. It was rare at that time to find an all-purpose opener like him, and it remains the same now.

The same traits are seen in Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has already debuted for India in Tests and T20Is and has proven his brilliance there. It is not long before Jaiswal gets a go in the ODI format. With the skills and temperament he has shown, one can expect that Jaiswal will fill the boots of his coach, Gautam Gambhir.

1.Openers who are great players of spin

Opening batters are generally considered to be great players of pace bowling. However, the best part of Gambhir’s game was how he handled spin bowling. He was a master of using the crease to his advantage and playing the spinners with dexterity, which is rare among the openers. Jaiswal has also shown that he can handle spin with as much ease as he plays the pacers. With cuts, sweeps, inside-out shots and the ability to read the length early, Yashasvi seems to have the expertise of Gambhir against spinners.
