Jay Shah Quits BCCI Secretary Role; Joins ICC As New Chairman

On Tuesday, August 27, the ICC announced that Jay Shah has been elected as the new ICC chairman. 

It is worth noting that Jay Shah will begin his tenure as the new ICC chairman from December 1 after Greg Barclay, the current chairman will end his 2nd term.

Shah, who is 35-year-old, is elected unopposed and is also the youngest person to become ICC chairman. 

August 27 was the last date to file the nominations for the post of ICC chairman, and there were earlier reports that mentioned that Shah has got the backing from ICC members. Thus, that has been proven correct after the 35-year-old has been elected unopposed. 

Changes We Could See In BCCI After Jay Shah Moves To ICC?

Till December, Shah would continue his role as the secretary, but after that, the apex cricket board is India would shortlist candidates to replace Shah. There were reports that Rohan Jaitley might succeed Shah, but he denied those rumours.

Jay Shah Comments On Becoming Youngest ICC Chairman

“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah stated.


“I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

Further, Shah also opened up on his goal to see cricket at Olympics 2024. 

“ While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways,” he added. 

Shah would continue to perform his duties as BCCI secretary till December 1. It is to be seen who will succeed Shah as his successor for the secretary post.
