Team India will start the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a crucial Test tour of England starting on June 20, 2025. The five-match series will see the team step into a new era under the fresh leadership of Shubman Gill. Star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been appointed vice-captain.
The squad for the England series also features two newcomers left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and and Sai Sudharsan. Both Arshdeep and Sudharsan have impressed in the domestic circuit and in the recently concluded IPL 2025.
As the senior team prepares for the opening Test, the India A side is currently playing the final fixture of a two-match unofficial Test series against the England Lions.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Eyes Unique Record
While India’s new-look leadership is set to take centre stage, all eyes will also be on Jasprit Bumrah, who is poised to achieve a rare individual milestone during the tour. Widely regarded as India’s most impactful fast bowler in overseas conditions, Bumrah is just one wicket away from equalling the great Wasim Akram’s record of most Test wickets by an Asian bowler in SENA countries.
Akram took 146 wickets in 32 Tests across SENA nations. Bumrah currently sits on 145 wickets from 31 Tests. Even more significantly, he is just five wickets away from becoming the first Asian bowler to reach 150 Test wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah's Workload Management A Priority
It is important to mention that the fast bowler suffered a back injury during the final Test of India’s tour of Australia earlier this year. Despite being the top performer in that series, which India lost 2-1, Bumrah’s workload is now being closely monitored.
Another point here to highlight is that head coach Gautam Gambhir mentioned that Bumrah will likely feature in only three of the five Tests in England.
