In the recent tragic stampede that claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has indicated that the government is seriously considering relocating the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium to a safer location.
Karnataka CM Hints At Relocation Of M Chinnaswamy Stadium
The stampede occurred outside the stadium as thousands gathered to celebrate RCB's first IPL title. The overwhelming crowd led to chaos, resulting in a deadly rush that shocked the city and the nation.
Speaking to ANI, CM Siddaramaiah said, “The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location," news agency ANI quoted the Chief Minister as saying.
In response to the incident, five police officers involved in the event’s security arrangements have been suspended. Additionally, the state's intelligence chief and the Chief Minister's political secretary have also been replaced.
It is also important to mention that the Karnataka government has increased compensation for the victims’ families. Originally set at ₹10 lahks, the amount was raised to ₹25 lakh per deceased.
Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government. Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced. The case has been taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken. Although the government has not done anything wrong, the incident is saddening. The government has not taken any wrong step in this case, and since legal action has been taken against the guilty, there is no question of embarrassment for the government. Did the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh resign when people died during the Kumbh Mela? Did the BJP and JDS demand the resignation of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh?..." he added.
Plans To Relocate The Stadium
Amid renewed concerns about the stadium’s central location and its inability to handle massive crowds safely, CM Siddaramaiah said the state government is open to shifting the M Chinnaswamy stadium. However, he acknowledged that this would require careful planning and identification of a new site. “We will consider the suggestion seriously,” he said, adding that public safety will be the top priority moving forward.
