Former England captain Michael Vaughan reckons that appointing Shubman Gill as the Indian captain was a bold strategic move by the BCCI. Recently, promising top-order batter Shubman Gill officially replaced Rohit Sharma, with the Indian cricket body announcing him as the Test captain going forward.

Vaughan Assesses BCCI’s Move As Gill Gets An Inexperienced Team To Lead

India recently suffered two huge setbacks as legendary cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bid adieu to Test cricket. The retirement of the veteran duo created massive voids in the Indian Test lineup ahead of the England tour.

Vaughan believes leading a pack of youngsters could be challenging for Shubman Gill, who himself has yet to prove his credentials as a reliable batter in overseas Tests.

However, the former English skipper reckons that Gill has all the ingredients to live up to the challenge both as a captain and a batter.

"Well, it's official - Shubman Gill is the new face of Indian Test cricket, stepping up as captain for the England series. It's a bold move, trusting a young leader with a new-look team after the retirements of giants like Rohit and Kohli. Gill's got plenty to prove, especially away from home, but he's shown he's got the temperament for big moments," Vaughan was quoted as saying by Times Of India

The legendary batter also anticipated India’s youth-filled core to make a statement in the England Tests, with players like Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, B Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Reddy and Dhruv Jurel getting prepared to give the hosts a run for their money.

"With Rishabh Pant as his deputy and a squad hungry to make their mark, this England tour could be the start of something special for India's next generation. Don't be surprised if these youngsters rise to the occasion," he added.

Led by Gill, India will face England in a five-Test series starting this month. The first Test commences on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
