Cameron Green, the swashbuckling Australian all-rounder, had a heartwarming revelation. On the eve of his daunting back surgery last October, Cameron Green received a surprise message carrying immense weight. It came from Jasprit Bumrah, India's pace spearhead, reaching out mid-Test series against New Zealand to check on his former Mumbai Indians teammate.
Bumrah, having undergone the same procedure just 18 months prior and returning stronger than ever, offered Green the ultimate reassurance that his surgery was the right path.
Cam Green Appreciates Bumrah's Concern
Jasprit Bumrah's remarkable recovery and subsequent bowling peak served as a powerful beacon for the young Australian all-rounder. For Green, the gesture transcended cricket rivalry, providing profound comfort and confidence as he faced his own rehabilitation.
"That is really special. And makes you feel a lot better about it. I didn't play with him in Mumbai but that was the connection through there. Spent a bit of time with him there. To get someone like him to reach out and then to watch him during the summer, to see how good he is obviously post-surgery, filled me with a lot of confidence and strength," said Green.
As quoted by Cricbuzz, Green also found a silver lining in his injury setbacks, appreciating the chance to focus purely on batting, instead of extra stressing with the ball.
"The silver lining to having four back injuries is I've got four chances only to be a batter. I felt like my game's always been good around those periods. So, that's never to take away, I'm always going to keep bowling. But you're so much more relaxed... It does take away from batting. So, certainly, just batting is nice," Green says with a smile.
This singular focus is evident in Green's current net sessions in London, radiating freedom and confidence. His successful run with Gloucestershire in the County Championship ahead of the World Test Championship final underscores his batting form.
Green Shares Update On His Recovery
Reflecting on his recovery, Green noted advancements in the surgical procedure compared to his state teammate Jason Behrendorff, who he consulted first. Green was mobile remarkably quickly.
"I think the procedure has changed definitely since Jason Behrendorff had his. I've got three scars, as they were able to miss the muscle a bit more, a little bit invasive as compared to Jason who only has one scar... I don't think he could move for 7-8 weeks. He was going a bit like 'Stuff you'," Green says laughing.
Now fit and eager, Green looks forward to reclaiming his gully position alongside Beau Webster, his journey back significantly eased by a timely message from a world-class bowler who had walked the same path.
