In the 2024 T20 World Cup, the USA secured an impressive win against Canada in the opener at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. Meanwhile, co-hosts West Indies began the Caribbean leg of the tournament as they hosted Papua New Guinea at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday.

Despite the historic significance of the event, the lack of spectators and empty stands sparked outrage among fans on social media, who criticized the ICC.

While the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York saw a decent turnout for the warm-up game between India and Bangladesh on Saturday, the same enthusiasm was not seen in Guyana.

The West Indies, two-time T20 World Cup champions, was greeted by a sparse crowd. Fans attributed the low turnout to increased ticket prices and expressed their disappointment and frustration online, fans called out to ICC to address the issue.

In their T20 World Cup opener, West Indies narrowly avoided an upset against PNG and managed a tense five-wicket victory. After PNG set a target of 137 runs, with an impactful contribution from Sese Bau's crucial half-century. West Indies found themselves in a challenging position on a tricky pitch.

PNG's bowlers exploited the conditions effectively, and reduced West Indies to 97/5 after 16 overs, with the required run rate climbing to 12 runs per over.
