In the T20 World Cup 2024 clash between co-hosts West Indies and Papua New Guinea, the latter is giving the two-time champions hard time in the chase at Guyana's Providence Stadium on Sunday evening.

After losing the top and middle order in a tricky chase, PNG skipper Assad Vala conquered the battle against Sherfane Rutherford, who played a careless stroke in a crucial juncture of the 137-run chase.

Rutherford's dismissal gave the PNG team hope as they lost captain Rovman Powell moments before the southpaw's demise. However, Roston Chase and Andre Russell held their nerves to finish off the game, winning by wickets with six deliveries to go. 

Earlier in the game, the minnows got to a challenging total of 136 runs thanks to Sese Bau's gritty fifty. Later in the second innings, the spinners and change-of-pace bowlers almost took PNG towards the history-making moment. But destiny had other plans.
