West Indies captain Rovman Powell has called for an improvement in performance after his team failed to overwhelm Papua New Guinea in the opening Group C match of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Chasing a meagre 137-run target, it took West Indies about 19 overs to overhaul PNG’s total at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 2.

The West Indies team even stared down the barrel at one stage of their run-chase before Roston Chase lifted their pursuit with a cracking 27-ball 42*.

Rovman Powell credits PNG for putting up a fight

While speaking during the post-match presentation, West Indies captain Rovman Powell admitted his team’s shortcomings despite securing a five-wicket win over PNG in Guyana.

He claimed that their performance can get better in all three aspects of the game going forward in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 30-year-old also credited PNG for putting up a fight in the opening Group C match of the tournament.

Rovman Powell said: "I think we can be better in all three departments. Credit has to be given to PNG. I think their plans were simple and they played good cricket. I think the score was a little, 10 or 15, too much. And as a bowling group that's something we need to work on. They played smartly. We weren't up to the straps to the level we want to play. We were at 60-70 percent. Hopefully we can correct that for the second game.”

Rovman Powell himself struggled to get going in the West Indies run-chase, scoring a sluggish 15 before he was caught behind by PNG wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga off the bowling of Chad Soper.

Regardless, with a win in the pocket, West Indies occupy the top spot on the Group C points table. They will now go up against Uganda on June 8 at the same Guyana-based venue.
