In an unexpected turn of events reports from Day 4 of the Test between India A and Australia A emerged as Ishan Kishan and the Indian team were accused of ball-tampering after on-field umpires changed the ball used by the visitors overnight during the clash at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
However, a recent statement from Cricket Australia has shed light as they clarified these claims and deemed them false. As revealed in their official statement, the ball used in the fourth innings of the match was changed "due to deterioration" and not because of tampering.
Ishan Gets A Nasty Warning From Umpire
Cricket Australia has said that before play, a decision had been communicated with the captains and managers of both teams that there would be no further action over the contentious incident from the first-class match.
For context, Ruturaj Gaikwad led India A were perplexed over the change of the ball when play started on the fourth day of the encounter, prompting the players into a debate with Umpire Shawn Craig.
India A wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was warned by umpire Craig for probable dissent while commenting on a change in ball as "very stupid decision", which went to stump microphones. Craig was reacted to this and commented, ""Excuse me. You will be on report for dissent. That is very inappropriate behaviour. Because of your actions, we changed the ball."
Meanwhile, the umpires ruled that the ball had "deteriorated," thus exempting it from the five-run penalty in Law 41.3.4.
Nathan McSweeney and Beau Webster Lead Australia A To Victory
Australia A did well to outclass India A by seven wickets in the first Test at Mackay and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Earlier in the game, captain Nathan McSweeney won the toss and put India A to bat into a seam-friendly pitch. India conceded just 107 runs in their first innings with Brendan Doggett claiming 6 wickets for just 15 runs.
Australia A responded with 195, and India A managed 312 in their second innings, led by Sai Sudharsan's century. Chasing 225, McSweeney (88*) and Beau Webster (61*) guided Australia A to victory on the final day.
India A will now meet Australia A in the second game of the series on Thursday at the MCG.
