The Indian Premier League's newest sensation, a robot dog called 'Champak,' is in trouble, but not for anything it has done on the pitch. The BCCI is being taken to court over the name by the publisher of the popular children's comic 'Champak.'

The robot dog was introduced in IPL 2025 in order to increase the entertainment and enjoyment of the game. The robot dog made its debut in a match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians played in Delhi.

Ever since, the robot has been a crowd favourite. It can walk, jump, do handshakes, and even make heart signs. Fans especially love how it interacts with players like MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya.

IPL’s Robot Dog Faces Legal Action

Interestingly, the robot did not have a name at first. IPL conducted an online vote, and fans were asked to choose a name. 'Champak' was the most popular choice with a large majority. But the children's comic 'Champak' has now gone to court and lodged a legal complaint.

The comic is published by Delhi Press Patra Prakashan, and they have moved the Delhi High Court, claiming that using the same name for the robot dog is a trademark violation.

They are concerned it might confuse others, particularly kids, who have been familiar with Champak as a popular comic character.

The court, meanwhile, has now sent a notice to BCCI, asking them to respond. While the IPL robot continues to wow fans with its tricks and camera work, this legal battle may decide if it can keep its name or not.

The funny exchange saw Gavaskar share a few dance moves with the robot and then humorously run away, much to the delight of viewers. The viral video points to the lighter aspect of IPL 2025, where entertainment and cricket cross paths.
