Chennai Super Kings is having one of their toughest seasons in the history of the IPL. With CSK languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has suggested that the time may have come for Dhoni to bid farewell to the league.

Adam Gilchrist Wants MS Dhoni To Retire

Speaking ahead of CSK’s crucial clash against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Gilchrist told Cricbuzz:

“MS Dhoni has nothing to prove to anyone in the game. Well, he will know what to do but, for the future, perhaps he does not need to be there next year. I love you MS, you are a champion and an icon.”

Tough Season For MS Dhoni And CSK

The 43-year-old veteran returned to lead the side in the absence of regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, but has struggled to turn the tide. CSK have lost seven of their nine matches so far, sitting at the bottom of the table with only four points and the worst net run rate in the league at -1.302.

Though Dhoni has shown glimpses of his finishing prowess, his overall contribution has been modest. In nine innings, he has scored 140 runs at an average of 28.00 and a strike rate of 142.85. His standout performance came against LSG, where he smashed 26 off 11 balls.

Can CSK Still Make The Playoffs?

Despite the grim outlook, CSK are still mathematically alive in the playoff race. To qualify, they would need to win all five of their remaining matches, which would take them to 14 points. Historically, 14 points can be enough for a top-four finish, but qualification would also depend on a significantly improved net run rate and favourable results in other fixtures.
