The BCCI has confirmed the suspension of the IPL 2025 season citing security concerns. The South African women’s cricket team secured a huge win over Sri Lanka to sign off from the Women’s ODI tri-series in Colombo. In other news, Shukri Conrad is set to extend his coaching duties for South Africa beyond Tests.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, May 9.

IPL 2025 Suspended By BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended the IPL 2025 season by a week in the light of India’s border tensions with longstanding geo-political rivals Pakistan. The Indian board is expected to unveil the new schedule and new venues for the remainder of the tournament within the coming days. As many as 16 matches are still remaining in the season, including all four playoffs’ fixtures.

The decision was taken a day after Punjab Kings’ home match against Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was halted after just 10 overs of play citing security concerns and floodlight failure.

South Africa Claim Consolation Win To End Tri-Series

South Africa Women claimed a consolation win by defeating hosts Sri Lanka in the final opening round match of the ODI tri-series in Colombo. Batting first, South Africa charted 315-9 from 50 overs courtesy of a fluent century from Annerie Dercksen (104 off 84). Chloe Tryon also bludgeoned 74 runs off just 51 balls while openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits listed valiant 30s each. For Sri Lanka, young off-spinner Dewmi Vihanga picked up her maiden five-wicket haul with figures of 5-43.

Chasing 316, Sri Lanka folded up for just 239 in 42.5 overs, with captain Chamari Athapaththu scoring the lone half-century of the innings. Tryon claim astonishing figures of 5-34 to cap a remarkable all-round spectacle for herself as South Africa secured a huge 76-run win before Sri Lanka vs India final.

Shukri Conrad Becomes South Africa’s All-Format Coach

Shukri Conrad has been appointed as South Africa’s all-format coach until the 2027 ICC ODI Men’s Cricket World Cup at home. Conrad, who has been coaching the South African Test team since January 2023, will be replacing Rob Walter in ODIs and T20Is. It is worth noting that Walter tendered his resignation as South Africa’s white-ball coach last month.

Under Conrad’s guidance, South Africa reached the final of the 2023-25 WTC by topping the points table.

BCCI Planning To Submit Bid For Hosting 2027 WTC Final

The BCCI will reportedly make a bid to host the final of the 2027 WTC. As reported by The Guardian, the Indian board has already expressed interest in hosting the high-profile match during an ICC executive meeting in Zimbabwe last month. If negotiations go through, the 2027 match will mark the first WTC final to be played outside England, breaking the cycle of 2021 (Southampton), 2023 (The Oval) and 2025 (Lord’s) finals from the first three editions of the championship.

ECB Offers To Host IPL 2025 - Report

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reportedly offered to host the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. London based renowned journalist George Dobell has stated that the ECB has even contacted the BCCI after the Indian board suspended IPL 2025 for a week citing security concerns during a potential war with Pakistan.

In case if BCCI accepts the offer, England will become the third overseas nation to host an IPL season in any capacity after South Africa and the UAE.
