In an interesting development, the Ahmedabad based Torrent Group has reached an agreement with CVC Capital Partners to earn a majority share in the IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans (GT). The ownership lock-in period ends before the IPL 2025, and a deal is expected to go through swiftly in a couple of months.

It was widely speculated that the Gautam Adani-promoted, Adani Group will buy the IPL team, GT, but as per reports, they have backed out of the race, leaving the Torrent Group as the clear front-runners.

As per reports, the Adani Group stepped back from the deal due to the high price-tag. Interestingly, both Torrent Group and Adani were unsuccessful in buying the Gujarat Titans franchise in 2021. As a result, the CVC Capitals, which has investments in La Liga, Premiership Rugby and Volleyball World, purchased the side for a whopping INR 5,625 crore in 2021.

"Torrent and CVC have a gentleman's agreement in place for the Gujarat Titans since a formal deal can only be signed after the lock-in period ends," one of the sources said on condition of anonymity.

The Torrent Group may acquire the majority stake, but there is a high-probability that the CVC Capital will remain as the minority stakeholder in the franchise.

GT had a poor IPL 2024 season

The Gujarat based franchise had a stellar debut IPL season, winning the title in their first attempt. Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, the team defeated Rajasthan Royals to clinch the championship.

In the second season, they came close to winning the IPL title, but were outclassed by CSK on the last delivery of the match. Ahead of IPL 2024, they had a change of leadership, with Shubman Gill being appointed their captain. 

This affected the team balance as the side finished 8th with just 5 wins under their belt. Team's regular skipper, Hardik joined Mumbai Indians, and it changed the dynamics of the team.
