Pratika Rawal to get her deserved due [Source: @sagarcasm/X.com]
Pratika Rawal, who played a crucial role in India Women’s World Cup victory, was denied the winner's medal due to her injury. However, after Jay Shah’s intervention, the opener will now receive her due.
The confusion started because Rawal, despite scoring big earlier in the tournament, missed the knockout stages after an injury.
Under the rules of the ICC, only players in the final 15-member squad at the end of the tournament were eligible to receive a medal.
That meant Rawal, though named earlier and having done a lot for the team, initially didn’t qualify since Shafali Verma replaced her.
ICC to award the winner’s medal to Pratika Rawal
Pratika Rawal found herself without a winner’s medal during the official celebrations. She joined the team on a wheelchair but missed out on a medal.
To make matters more confusing, she was seen wearing a support-staff medal when she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which raised eyebrows and sparked a debate on recognition in sport.
However, to clear the air, Pratika Rawal told CNN News18 that the matter was personally taken up by Jay Shah, former BCCI secretary and sitting ICC Chairman He reportedly intervened and made sure she would receive her medal on her own.
"Jay Shah intervened and told us he wants to make sure I get a medal of my own. It is on the way. I will get it soon," Rawal said.
With the medal now enroute, Rawal’s journey reaches the recognition many felt she deserved from the start.
Pratika Rawal had a solid tournament
Meanwhile, Pratika Rawal had a memorable run in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 before an unfortunate injury ended her campaign early.
The young Indian batter scored 308 runs in six innings at an impressive average of 51.33, including a brilliant 122 off 134 balls against New Zealand.
During the tournament, she also became the joint-fastest woman to reach 1,000 ODI runs. However, an ankle injury in the group stage forced her to miss the knockout matches as Shafali Verma took her place.
