After nearly a decade of playing for the Sydney Sixers, with several notable performances over the years, all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been named captain of the franchise for the upcoming WBBL 11 season.
Gardner’s memorable tenure with the Sixers includes two championship titles and numerous individual awards, making her the ideal choice to lead the team forward.
For the unversed, Gardner takes over the captaincy from Ellyse Perry, who has led the Sixers since the league’s inception in 2015. Under Perry’s leadership, the Sixers won two WBBL titles, while she herself earned a long list of personal achievements that cemented her legacy as one of the greats of the game.
Ashleigh Gardner overwhelmed upon appointment
Sydney Sixers General Manager Rachel Haynes congratulated Gardner on her appointment as captain, welcoming her with warm words.
"Ash has grown immensely as a leader; she’s a phenomenal player and will be instrumental in the future success of the club. I am delighted to see her take on the captaincy this season,” Haynes said.
Ashleigh Gardner herself expressed her gratitude and excitement about taking on the new role.
“I’m honoured to be appointed captain of the Sydney Sixers, a club I’ve proudly represented for my whole career. Over the past decade I’ve learned from some amazing leaders, including Pez (Ellyse Perry) and Midge (Alyssa Healy) at the Sixers, and I can’t wait to lead the team in WBBL 11," Gardner stated.
Gardner's decorated WBBL legacy
A foundational pillar of the club, Gardner holds the record for the most appearances (135 matches) and has contributed significantly with both bat and ball, scoring 2,607 runs and claiming 102 wickets.
In WBBL 10, Gardner amassed 103 runs from her 10 outings. With the ball, she picked up 16 wickets, recording her best figures of 4 for 21 during the season. She also maintained an impressive economy rate of 6.89, with her best bowling figures standing as her career-best in the WBBL.
