Yuvraj Singh, one of India’s greatest cricketing icons, has found a unique and compassionate way of mentoring young players. However, he revealed that his coaching philosophy is completely opposite to that of his father, former India cricketer Yograj Singh.
Since retirement in 2011, Yuvraj has donned the mentor’s hat and has coached many prominent talents such as Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill.
Yuvraj Singh takes a dig at his father Yograj
In a recent interview with PTI, Yuvraj Singh opened up about how his coaching approach is not similar to that of his father, Yograj Singh.
"I am definitely nothing like Yograj Singh. I am a very different person, and a very different personality. My style of coaching is very different. I believe when you are coaching someone or mentoring someone, you need to be in their shoes and you need to understand their mindset, what they are going through, rather than telling them what to do. It has to be like a push and pull. You take some and you give some. So it is important to understand how to be in the head of a 19-year-old," Yuvraj said.
Yograj Singh, popular for his strict discipline and no-nonsense attitude, played a huge role in shaping Yuvraj’s early career. But his methods were famously tough.
Stories of Yograj’s harsh training sessions and fiery temper are well known. It’s even said that he once threw away Yuvraj’s skating shoes to force him into cricket.
While those methods may have produced a champion, Yuvraj Singh believes today’s young players need something different.
"When I was 19 years old, nobody understood the challenges that I was facing, so when I see a 19 or a 20-year-old, I know what challenges they are facing mentally, and it is about listening to them, understanding their mindset and working accordingly rather than telling them what to do," he added.
And clearly, his approach is working. Stars like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, both of whom trained closely with Yuvraj in their early years, are now among India’s brightest talents.
Gill has already become India’s ODI and Test captain, while Abhishek has earned the title of the world’s No. 1 T20I batter.
Overall, from surviving cancer to helping shape India’s next generation of stars, Yuvraj Singh continues to inspire, not through strictness like his father, but through empathy, patience, and understanding.
