India kicked off their home season in dominant fashion, securing their biggest victory over Bangladesh in terms of runs with a massive 280-run win at the Chepauk Stadium on Sunday. The hosts outclassed Bangladesh in every department, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja spinning webs around the visitors while Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant piled on the misery with scintillating centuries.

This win eclipsed India’s previous record of a 208-run victory against the same opponent in Hyderabad back in 2017. Although India won by an inning against the Tigers, in terms of runs, this was the biggest win against Bangladesh in Test cricket.

Ashwin and Jadeja turn the tide for India

Facing overcast conditions, India were asked to bat first, and Bangladesh’s seamers made early inroads, reducing the hosts to a precarious 144/6. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s valiant 56 was the lone bright spot among India’s top order, but the seventh-wicket partnership between Jadeja and Ashwin turned the tide.

The duo stitched a magnificent 199-run stand, with Ashwin notching up a stellar 113 and Jadeja contributing 86. Their effort propelled India to a competitive total of 376, despite Hasan Mahmud’s brilliant five-wicket haul—making him the first Bangladeshi bowler to achieve this feat on Indian soil.

Bangladesh, in reply, found themselves caught between a rock and a hard place. The visitors crumbled under pressure, managing a meagre 149 runs in their first innings.

Apart from Shakib Al Hasan’s 32, none of their batters showed any real resistance as Jasprit Bumrah led India’s charge with figures of 4/50. With a massive first-innings lead of 227 runs, India already had one foot firmly on the victory podium.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant take the game away from Bangladesh

India’s second innings started on shaky ground, with Bangladesh sniffing an opportunity at 67/3. But just as the visitors seemed to have a foothold, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant slammed the door shut on any hopes of a comeback.

Both young batters showcased their class, with Gill staying unbeaten on 119 and Pant smashing a belligerent 109. Their centuries powered India to 287/4 before declaring, setting Bangladesh a mammoth target of 515 runs.

Bangladesh’s openers, Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam offered a glimmer of hope and a solid start, but it wasn’t long before the Indian spinners took control. Najmul Hossain Shanto stood tall with a fighting 82, while Shakib Al Hasan chipped in with 26. Yet, it was Ashwin’s magic with the ball that sealed the deal for India.

The veteran off-spinner, introduced after the first hour on day four, ran through the Bangladesh lower order, bagging his 37th five-wicket haul in Tests—an achievement that saw him equal the legendary Shane Warne. Jadeja also played his part, picking up three wickets to complement Ashwin’s six-for.

A record-breaking win for India

India’s crushing victory by 280 runs marked their largest win over Bangladesh in terms of runs, surpassing their previous best by 72 runs. Ashwin’s match-winning performance with both bat and ball earned him accolades, while India’s all-round dominance set the tone for the season ahead.
