Over-rate penalties have been imposed on India in the first Test against South Africa. Aside from being fined 10% of their match fee, Rohit Sharma's team lost two significant ICC World Test Championship points in the first Test against South Africa.

The punishment was handed down by Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees following the determination that India fell two overs short of the target.

In the aftermath of the Test loss, India slipped to No. 5 with 16 points from three Tests and a points percentage of 44.44. The deduction of points for the slow-over rate caused India to slip below Australia to No. 6, with 14 points and a points percentage of 38.89.

India Out Of WTC Final Race?

However, there is nothing to worry about, Indian fans. The battle (or, in other words, the tournament) has just begun, and there are lots of fixtures coming in front of them. Although South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan are ahead of Rohit Sharma & Co., things can change anytime soon considering we are going through the early stages, and the final will be two years later.

India will next play South Africa in Cape Town on January 3 in the second and final Test of the series. After that, they will play a five-match series in red-ball cricket on January 25, whereas South Africa will play a two-match Test series in February following the India Tests.
