Brief Scores: India (1st innings): 245 all out (67.4 overs) [KL Rahul: 101 (137), Virat Kohli: 38 (64); Kagiso Rabada 5/59 (20), Nandre Burger 3/50 (15.4)] & India (2nd innings): 131 all out (34.1 overs) [Virat Kohli: 76 (82), Shubman Gill: 26 (37); Nandre Burger 4/33 (10), Marco Jansen 3/36 (7.1)] lost to South Africa (1st innings): 408 all out (108.4 overs) [Dean Elgar: 185 (287), Marco Jansen: 84 (147); Jasprit Bumrah 4/69 (26.4), Mohammed Siraj 2/91 (24)] by an innings and 32 runs.

South Africa ravaged India’s entire batting line-up on Day 3 to seal an innings win at Centurion and go 1-0 up in their two-match Test series.

Elgar, Jansen take South African lead to 163

Unbeaten batters Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen added over 100 more runs to South Africa’s 256-run overnight total to zip past the 350-run mark inside the opening session of Day 3. Jansen bludgeoned 11 boundaries and a six in his 147-ball unbeaten knock to score 84, while stand-in captain Elgar was trapped down the leg side by Shardul Thakur for 185.

Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin accounted for the remaining wickets on offer to envelop South Africa’s first-innings response at 408. Bumrah finished his spell with figures of 4-69, while new-ball pacemate Mohammed Siraj collected 2-91. Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, and Ashwin also chipped in with a wicket each in the high-scoring South African innings.

Kohli no match for Burger, Rabada’s collective efforts

Rohit Sharma fell cheaply to Kagiso Rabada for the second time in the match, as India’s 163-run deficit-wiping pursuit got off to a torrid start. His opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, meanwhile, became the first of Nandre Burger’s four victims of the day as India slumped further by the time of Tea.

Shubman Gill packed a confident 26 until he was cleaned up by Marco Jansen, while Virat Kohli’s 76 emerged as the biggest benefactor of India’s sorry-looking scorecard. Debutant Burger finished with figures of 4-33 and his pace mates Rabada (2-32) and Jansen (3-36) also reaped the benefits of the pristine Centurion conditions on offer to the fullest.

India eventually folded up for just 131 in 34.1 overs to hand South Africa an innings win to concede the early lead in the series.

The two sides will now travel to Cape Town for the series decider, set to be played between January 3 and January 7.
