South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, who also will represent Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL 2025, has been sidelined from the second Test against Sri Lanka due to a right groin injury. This injury will also keep him out of South Africa's upcoming home series against Pakistan.
Coetzee felt discomfort during Day 4 of the first Test against Sri Lanka and had to leave the field after bowling just three overs in the morning session. He later returned briefly to dismiss Dinesh Chandimal but was visibly struggling. Scans confirmed he has a muscle strain in his right groin, requiring 4–6 weeks to recover.
Kwena Maphaka Replaces Gerald Coetzee
Kwena Maphaka, a young bowler who made his international debut earlier this year, will replace Coetzee for the second Test. The match is set to begin on December 5 at St George’s Park.
Coetzee’s injury may also affect his participation in the SA20 League starting January 9. As a key player for the Joburg Super Kings, he could miss their opening match against MI Cape Town on January 11.
Coetzee’s absence from South Africa’s squad has added injury troubles. All-rounder Wiaan Mulder is also out after fracturing his finger. Despite these major setbacks, South Africa defeated Sri Lanka in the first Test against by 233 runs and they have boosted their chances of making the World Test Championship (WTC) final. They currently sit in second place on the WTC points table, overtaking defending champions Australia.
