Brisbane Heat’s start to WBBL 2025-26 has hit a bit of a bump. Their explosive all-rounder Grace Harris won’t feature in the season opener against the defending champions Melbourne Renegades on Sunday at Allan Border Field, while young leggie Grace Parsons has been ruled out of the entire tournament for medical reasons.

Harris sidelined but nearing return

It’s been a frustrating few months for Grace Harris. The power-hitter missed out on her World Cup dream after picking up a calf injury while fielding in the final ODI against India in September. The timing couldn’t have been worse as she was in solid touch and primed for the global stage.

Harris was replaced in Australia’s World Cup squad and sent home for rehab, but there is finally some good news on the horizon. The 30-year-old is reportedly on track for a comeback soon and the Heat camp expects her to return to action in the coming days. Knowing Harris, she will be raring to swing hard and make up for lost time once she is back in teal.

Grace Parsons out for the season

In another blow for Brisbane, young spinner Grace Parsons has been ruled out of WBBL 2025-26 entirely. The 22-year-old leggie, who has been a rising star in the domestic circuit, is sidelined due to medical reasons. It is a cruel twist for someone who was on the cusp of cementing her spot after a breakout 2023–24 season.

Parsons last featured in the WNCL final earlier this year, where she picked up 3/29 for Queensland Fire in a losing cause. She had finished the season as the leading wicket-taker and even made her WBBL debut last summer. According to the Heat, Parsons has already returned to light bowling sessions in the nets and is likely to be fully fit by early next year.

Her spot in the squad has been filled by former Adelaide Strikers and South Australia batter Annie O’Neil, who moved to Queensland earlier this year. O’Neil’s already had a taste of Heat colours in the T20 Spring Challenge and will be eager to make an impression.

Big names ready for the opener

Despite the setbacks, the Heat’s squad for the opener still looks stacked. Indian star Jemimah Rodrigues will be available after arriving in Brisbane on Saturday following India’s World Cup celebrations. South Africa’s Nadine de Klerk, who played a key role in her side’s runner-up finish at the World Cup, is also part of the 13-member squad.

The addition of West Indies allrounder Chinelle Henry further strengthens the line-up. Henry, known for her destructive hitting and athleticism, could prove to be the X-factor for the Heat this season.

Renegades miss Molineux but remain strong

The Renegades, meanwhile, will also be missing their regular captain Sophie Molineux for the first two games as she manages her workload after a history of injuries. In her absence, leg-spinning allrounder Georgia Wareham will lead the side.

England’s teenage prodigy Davina Perrin could make her WBBL debut, joining fellow internationals Alice Capsey and Deandra Dottin in the squad. With both sides missing key players but still packed with firepower, Sunday’s clash in Brisbane promises to be a cracker.
