South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch is living a dream. Having waited years for his chance to break into the South African national team, the 30-year-old all-rounder is now being likened to cricket legend Jacques Kallis, and he cannot believe it.
Bosch recently made headlines by scoring his first Test century and taking 5 wickets in the same match, helping South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 329 runs in Bulawayo. The last time a South African achieved this feat was in 2002, and it was Jacques Kallis.
Corbin Bosch Reacts To Comparison With Jacques Kallis
Meanwhile, Corbin Bosch, speaking to SportsBoom.co.za and quoted by Sacricketmag, said he is humbled by the comparison to Jacques Kallis and is still coming to terms with it. He referred to Kallis as the GOAT of South African cricket.
"It’s just an honour to be mentioned in the same sentence as Jacques [Kallis]. He was the GOAT of cricket in South Africa. I haven’t really come to grips with it quite yet, but it’s incredibly special," Bosch said.
Bosch’s journey hasn’t been easy. He was a rising star in the 2014 U19 World Cup, playing with the likes of Kagiso Rabada. But while his teammates moved into the senior team, Bosch spent years struggling for form in domestic cricket. At one point, he even moved to Australia to try and revive his career.
His big break came when South Africa’s main fast bowlers, Gerald Coetzee, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, and Nandre Burger, were injured. Bosch was called up and immediately impressed. On debut, he took four wickets and scored 81 runs, helping South Africa reach the World Test Championship final.
“I’ve had to be patient. Even when times were tough, I knew that eventually, when I got the opportunity, I was going to try and grab it with both hands. I still need to pinch myself. It’s been a magical seven to 12 months. I’ve played some really good cricket, but I’ve also been surrounded by some fantastic people who’ve guided me and pushed me. Fortunately, the rub of the green has gone my way so far, and hopefully it continues," he added.
In the past year, Bosch has won the WTC title, lifted the SA20 trophy with MI Cape Town, and become a regular in the IPL. But he still is humble.
Bosch Scripts History With Century At No.8
Corbin Bosch made history by scoring an unbeaten 100 off 124 balls against Zimbabwe, becoming just the seventh South African to score a Test century at No. 8. With this feat, he surpassed legends like Quinton de Kock (91) and Shaun Pollock (99*). Bosch now joins Mark Boucher, JP Duminy, and others on the elite list of South African lower-order heroes in Test cricket.
