On Saturday, June 14, South Africa scripted history as the Temba Bavuma-led side ended their 27-year-long wait for a senior ICC title. Notably, the Proteas handed Australia a five-wicket defeat to win their first WTC trophy.
Aiden Markram was the player of the match as the right-handed batter scored a brilliant century to seal a win for the Rainbow Nation. Notably, SA were tasked to chase down 282 runs and while wickets fell from one end, the 30-year-old, who fell for a duck in the first innings, scored 136 (207), which featured 14 fours.
While it is Proteas' first senior trophy in a long time, Aiden Markram has tasted success before in the under-19 stage as he led South Africa to glory in the Under-19 World Cup in 2014.
It has been a special journey from the U-19 World Cup in 2014 to winning the WTC cycle. Well, for the uninformed, Markram is not the only player from South Africa's Under-19 World Cup squad in 2014 to win the WTC cycle. This article will look at all the players who were part of both tournaments.
1.Aiden Markram
Markram's name is quite obvious as the right-handed batter was Proteas captain in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup. South Africa locked horns against Pakistan, where he won the Player of the Series award for scoring 370 runs in the entire edition. In the final, Pakistan tumbled for 131 runs, and Markram scored an unbeaten 66 (125).
Talking about his WTC performance, Markram scored a duck in the first innings but followed it up with a century in the second innings.
2. Kagiso Rabada
Kagiso Rabada is another South Africa star who was a part of the title-winning team in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup. Rabada took 16 wickets and became an overnight star in his hometown. In the final against Pakistan, Kagiso took a solitary wicket.
In the WTC 2025 final, Rabada was the spearhead in bowling as he registered a nine-wicket haul in the match. The right-arm seamer triggered a collapse as he took a fifer in the first inning and a four-wicket haul in the 2nd innings.
3. Corbin Bosch
While Corbin Bosch was not a part of South Africa's playing XI in the WTC 2025 final, he played a key role in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup. The all-rounder was the player of the match in the finals as he took a four wicket haul.
Bosch's brilliant spell restricted Pakistan U-19 to just 132 runs, resulting in an easy win for the Proteas.
