In a significant development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed renowned Australian fielding specialist Shane McDermott as the new all-format fielding coach ahead of the national team’s three-match T20I tour of Bangladesh.
This marks a strategic move by Pakistan as it looks to strengthen one of its long-standing weak points, which is its fielding. The announcement is anticipated later this week, according to Telecom Asia Sport, as quoted by NDTV.
McDermott Brings Global Expertise To Pakistan Team
It is important to mention that the 44-year-old, holds High Performance Level Three Coaching Certificate. He comes highly recommended by newly appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson.
McDermott boasts extensive international experience, having previously worked with national and domestic teams across Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cricket Australia, the Western Australia Cricket Association, and Cricket Tasmania. His appointment signals a clear intent by the PCB to revamp its fielding standards.
Mohammad Masroor Bids Farewell
McDermott replaces Mohammad Masroor, who was serving as the fielding coach on a series-to-series basis. Masroor confirmed his departure via a heartfelt post on social media, expressing gratitude to the players, staff, and fans.
"Thank you to the players who trusted, the staff who supported, and the fans who believed,” Masroor wrote. “Though my chapter with the team ends here, I'll always be a part of Pakistan cricket's story. I leave with no regrets, only pride and best wishes for what lies ahead."
It is also important to note that alongside McDermott, Grant Luden makes his return as the strength and conditioning coach. Luden is no stranger to Pakistan cricket, having served in various roles within the setup over the years.
The PCB has also recently named former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the acting head coach for the Test team. The board is also expected to appoint Salman Agha as the new all-format captain, replacing Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan in leadership roles.
