Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have reportedly called Gujarat’s wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel for mid-season trials. This news was shared by former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer as quoted by News18. Even though CSK’s season has gone poorly and they’re already out of the playoff race, this move seems to hint that the team is planning ahead for the future.
Urvil Patel became popular after smashing a 28-ball century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Tripura, last year. His hundred is the second-fastest in men’s T20 history, only Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan has scored a faster one (27 balls).
CSK Take Interest In Urvil Patel
Despite his brilliant performance, Urvil didn’t get picked in the IPL auction. He was listed as player number 212 with a base price of Rs 30 lakh but went unsold.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer said,
“I’ve heard, I’ve got back room news that CSK have called Urvil Patel, the guy who got a couple of hundreds in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I’m surprised that he was not picked by any franchise."
“I was surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He’s been asked to trial there, so I don’t know what’s cooking there," Jaffer added.
Interestingly, CSK signed Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad after giving him a trial during the season.
CSK First Team Out Of Playoffs Race
CSK were knocked out of the IPL 2025 playoff race after losing to Punjab Kings on Wednesday, their 8th loss in 10 matches. Punjab chased down CSK’s score of 190, finishing at 194/6 with two balls to spare. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal played a key role, taking 4 wickets, including a hat-trick.
After the match, Punjab moved up to second place on the points table with 13 points, while CSK remained last with just 4 points.
At the moment, CSK already have wicketkeeper-batters like Vansh Bedi and Devon Conway in their squad. So calling Urvil for a trial at this stage has raised some eyebrows.
Meanwhile, CSK still have four matches left this season against RCB, KKR, RR, and GT.
