18th player to perform a hat-trick in the Indian Premier League, Yuzvendra Chahal has become only the third one to achieve the feat for the second time. In doing so, Chahal has joined the likes of Yuvraj Singh (2) and Amit Mishra (3) among players with multiple IPL hat-tricks.
With IPL 2024 not witnessing any such instance, Chahal, the only bowler to have picked three successive wickets in 2022, ended fans’ two-year long wait to relish such an achievement.
Pick of the bowlers for Punjab Kings during IPL 2025 Match 49 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium tonight, Chahal’s bowling figures of 3-0-32-4 played a key role in restricting Chennai Super Kings to 190 in 19.2 overs.
Fourth PBKS bowler to dismiss three batters in a row after Yuvraj, Axar Patel and Sam Curran, the leg-spinner is only the second one (first spinner) to do it at Chepauk. Notably, Chahal is the first bowler to perform a hat-trick against CSK.
Yuzi Chahal Performs Hat-Trick Vs CSK
In what was just his sixth match for Rajasthan Royals, Chahal had followed the likes of Ajit Chandila, Pravin Tambe, Shane Watson and Shreyas Gopal to become the fifth bowler to perform a hat-trick for the franchise.
Third bowler to achieve the milestone against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL history, the right-arm bowler was the first one to do it at the Brabourne Stadium. Interestingly, even Tambe’s IPL hat-trick had come against KKR.
Having picked career-best IPL bowling figures of 4-0-40-5, Chahal’s effort had bundled out the opposition for 210 in a 218-run chase back in the day.
An archetype game-changing performance had come at a time when Knight Riders required 38 runs off 21 balls with five wickets in hand. Having found a well-set Shreyas Iyer plumb in front of the stumps, Chahal also dismissed Shivam Mavi and Pat Cummins in the same over to reduce the equation to 38 off three overs with three wickets in hand.
Venkatesh Iyer was also dimissed in the same over, and he picked four wickets in a single over in that game. Eventually, he bagged five wickets in the game to stage a superb comeback for RR.
Shreyas, who was leading Kolkata back then, is leading Chahal in the ongoing match. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was Chahal’s teammate at Royals three years ago, is part of Super Kings’ squad at the moment. As the third individual to be present during both Chahal’s hat-tricks, Aaron Finch, who opened the batting for KKR in that match, is in Chennai as a commentator on Wednesday.
