Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh by the BCCI on Wednesday because his team bowled their overs too slowly during their IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Shreyas Iyer Fined ₹12 lakh Under Article 2.22
Since the team was running behind the required time, the on-field umpires, Akshay Totre and Anish Sahasrabudhe, only allowed four fielders outside the circle in the final over, a penalty for slow over-rate.
The IPL Code of Conduct clearly states that teams must bowl their overs within a specific time, and failure to do so leads to penalties for the captain. This was Punjab Kings’ first over-rate offence of the season, so Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh under Article 2.22, which deals with slow over-rates.
"Shreyas Iyer, Captain, Punjab Kings has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 49 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday."
"As this was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 Lakh," BCCI said in a release.
Shreyas Iyer Leads PBKS To A Thumping Win Against CSK
Despite the fine, Shreyas Iyer likely isn’t too worried. Firstly, a slow over-rate is considered a team issue, and it doesn’t add a demerit point to the captain’s personal record. Secondly, PBKS ended up winning the match, and Iyer was one of the main reasons why. He played a brilliant innings, scoring 72 runs off just 41 balls, helping his team chase down the target successfully.
The match also saw a fantastic performance from Yuzvendra Chahal, who took 4 wickets for 32 runs, including a hat-trick. His late burst with the ball helped PBKS restrict CSK to 190 runs. Although PBKS had a few tense moments during the chase, they managed to reach the target in the end, finishing at 194 for 6 with two balls to spare.
This victory has boosted PBKS to second place in the IPL points table with 13 points. On the other hand, CSK has now slipped to 10th place with only 4 points, which means they are now officially out of the playoff race for IPL 2025.
