Chelsea Football Club co-owner Todd Boehly has successfully bought Trent Rockets team in The Hundred, UK’s premier franchise cricket league
The American businessman, who bought the West London English Premier League Club in 2022, has acquired a fresh deal of 49% stake in the Trent Rockets team, who won the men's competition in 2022.
Nottinghamshire county still holds a controlling 51% share of the Rockets which is believed to have a total valuation of around £80 million. The Boehly’s group of Cain International put in the winning bid for a relatively smaller portion of the team beating some of the renowned bidders like IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders’ owners and Indian investor Amit Jain.
Previously, the group was interested in going behind the London Spirit and buying a stake in the London based franchise. However, a Silicon Valley consortium got their hands on the 49% stake in London Spirit for £145 million.
Boehly Is The 4th Non-IPL Owner In The Hundred
The Rockets are now the seventh team out of eight in The Hundred competition to be sold with only Southern Brave which is left to be purchased and likely to be sold later this week. The Delhi Capitals’ co-owners - GMR Group, who also have the majority stake in Hampshire County, is expected to get their hands on Southern Brave for the 100% portion of the team.
Boehly became the fourth non-IPL owner to buy a team in The Hundred and second such owner who has also invested in English Football clubs after Birmingham City co-owners Knighthead Capital who secured a stake in Birmingham Phoenix.
With acquiring stakes in Trent Rockets by Cain International which was co-founded by entrepreneur Jonathan Goldstein and Todd Boehly in 2014 expands his investment in sports leagues around the world. Earlier, Boehly and his group bought Chelsea for £4.25bn back in 2022, while he is also the co-owner of French football side Strasbourg and minority owner of Los Angeles Dodgers, a baseball team in Major League Baseball.
