Shaheen Afridi for Pakistan. [Source - x.com]
Former Pakistani cricketer and captain Rashid Latif has made a massive statement, questioning Shaheen Afridi’s spot in the Pakistan team and urging the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to look ahead of him in the coming future.
According to Latif, Afridi hasn't been able to rise up to the occasion for Pakistan and it's been some time that the left-arm pacer has delivered a match-winning performance for the team. In addition, Latif also felt that Naseem Shah has been quite ineffective and the right-arm seamer alongside Shaheen Afridi needs to make their way out.
Latif showed his concerns over the form of Pakistan’s two frontline pace bowlers as they have failed to create any positive impact for the team on the field in the recent past and are going to play a key role in the upcoming Champions Trophy that is scheduled to start from February 19.
Latif Concern Over Pakistan's Underperforming Pacers
The criticism of Shaheen and Naseem arose following Pakistan’s 78-run defeat in the first match against New Zealand in the ongoing Tri-Nation series in Lahore and Karachi.
While speaking in a private news channel as per PTI, Latif has called for a massive revamp soon in Pakistan's pace-attack following the ICC mega-event which is almost a week away from the first match being held.
“When was the last time Afridi delivered a match-winning performance? And Naseem has also not contributed significantly to Pakistan’s success,” the former wicketkeeper-batsman said.
The 56-year-old also reflected on how other players like Khushdil Shah and Salman Agha are under constant backlash and hardly anyone bats an eye on the senior players like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen as well.
“No one is talking about these (senior) players' lackluster performances. Youngsters will perform when the main (will) players step up,” Latif added.
Pakistan will be back in action in the Tri-Nation series on Tuesday, February 11, facing South Africa in what will be a virtual knockout as both the teams will be looking to win this encounter and qualify for the series finale against New Zealand.
