Hampshire Sport & Leisure Holdings Limited has signed a lucrative deal with GMR Global Pte Ltd (GGPL), owners of the popular IPL franchise Delhi Capitals. As per the signing, the GGPL will now hold a majority share in Hampshire Sport & Leisure Holdings Limited.

According to reports, Delhi Capitals owners will hold a 53 per cent share in Hampshire cricket, and a 100 per cent acquisition is expected to be completed within the next two years.

Hampshire Cricket Joins GMR’s Sporting Portfolio

The GMR holds a 50 percent stake in IPL and WPL franchises Delhi Capitals and Delhi Capitals Women. They also own ILT20 team Dubai Capitals and SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals and have invested in MLC team Seattle Orcas.

GMR’s latest acquisition of the Hampshire Sport & Leisure Holdings Limited means that the Indian multinational conglomerate will now hold a majority stake in the 160-year-old County Championship team Hampshire Cricket.

Rod Bransgrove, Chairman of Hampshire Sport & Leisure Holdings Group, described the acquisition as a “dream fulfillment” for him as well as for Hampshire cricket supporters. He added that they chose to partner up with GGPL because of their “shared values and commitment.”

Bransgrove also acknowledged the historic occasion, as the acquisition makes Hampshire the first-ever English cricket club to join an international cricket group, and claimed that the merger would open up fresh new opportunities towards the globalization of the sport.

GMR Group Corporate Chairman Grandhi Kiran Kumar said that he was attracted to the Hampshire Cricket Club because of Rod Bransgrove’s leadership that “closely mirrored” with that of the GMR group.
